Vietnam wins regional e-sport contest at home

Update 13/09/2012 - 10:51:47 AM (GMT+7)

Vietnam has won a Southeast Asian e-sport competition on home soil after beating Singapore in the final hosted by the central city of Da Nang on the weekend.

The hosts started the 2012 League of Legends tournament with a crushing defeat against the city state, which scored many triumphs at previous Asian contests, before thrashing strong rivals Malaysia and the Philippines in the next games.

They clashed again with Singapore in the finale on Saturday after the latter had already secured three successive winning matches.

Given strong encouragement by the home audience, the Vietnamese overpowered their opponents to clinch a 2-0 victory, snatching a VND100 million ($4,800) prize.

Vietnam will represent the Southeast Asian region at the World Championship organized in October in the U.S. The prize money for this tourney is $5 million.

A multiplayer online battle arena video game, the 2012 League of Legends competition was attended by five teams from Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
