Having good learning capability, enrolled in universities with good marks from the university entrance exams--many students cannot finish school, leaving the lecture halls, wasting some years of their lives, while causing a big waste to the society.

The reports by universities show that hundreds of students cannot finish school as initially scheduled every year, because they still do not finish compulsory learning subjects. Good learning capability not enough for university student

TLM, a student of the Journalist Faculty of the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanity, has been well known among university students for his “undesirable achievements.” M’s classmates finished school in 2008, while M still has not obtained the university degree, because he still has not finished compulsory professional subjects.

A lecturer of the school said that in principle, M’s learning records have been abrogated and M had had to leave the school. However, the university is considering following a flexible way by sending him to the in-service training courses instead of full-time training.

Also according to the lecturer, since 2006, the school has applied the credit-based education system, which allows students to finish school some months later than others. Prior to 2006, the school followed the yearly training system, under which no less than five students could not finish school on schedule every year.

GA has also been well known in the journalist faculty for his good marks from the university entrance exams. GA was highly appreciated by the lecturers in his first year of studying there and a lot of articles published on local newspapers.

However, after that, the student spent most of his time on working and earning money, while he did not go to school and did not attend the exams.

GA had to give up studying at the school when his classmates entered the third academic year, because of the high number of subjects he had not finished. He has become more famous, as he regularly attends the parties through the night or online games shops.

PCH of the Information Technology Faculty of the HCM City University of Natural Sciences has been recognized as a talented student, especially when his software piece received the city’s awards. However, H still cannot graduate from the school, because he spent most of his time on working, not on studying.

“Since I played truant regularly, I could not attend mid-term exams. Though I got high marks from the end-semester exams, I could not meet the requirements to graduate school,” H said.

In-service training – the lifebuoy for students

According to Nguyen Anh Duc from the Students’ Affairs Division of the HCM City University of Technique Education, 28 students could not meet the requirements to be able to graduate school this year. The students would be transferred to the in-service training courses, and they would get the university degrees when they finish all compulsory subjects.

“They went working during the studying, therefore, they did not have enough time to fulfill the curriculums,” he explained.

Shifting from full-time to in-service training proves to be a lifebuoy for many students, because they would still be able to obtain university degrees and they do not have to leave school with “empty hands.”

However, Pham Tan Ha, Head of the Training Division of the HCM City University of Social Sciences, has admitted that students do not want to follow in-service training courses, which are believed to have low training quality. Especially, the number of students registering to follow in-service training has decreased after some provincial authorities and state agencies announced they would not recruit in-service training graduates.
