City colleges get tough with late tuition payers

Update 06/12/2012 - 09:07:03 AM (GMT+7)

Ho Chi Minh City universities and junior colleges have started taking strong measures against students who fail to pay tuition on time.

The Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) is currently willing to delete students’ names from the class list in case of late tuition payment, according to Nguyen Quoc Anh, head of admission and media relations.

Dr. Nguyen Duc Minh, academic affairs chief at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, said that any late payment will automatically result in the removal of a student’s name from the register, meaning he/she will have to repeat a certain module.

“Those who fail to pay fees on time may also be disciplined in accordance with the university’s academic regulations,” Dr. Minh added.

The University of Economics – Ho Chi Minh City adopts the same hard-line stance on overdue tuition as they will not admit any late payers, except for needy students.

“Students tardy in paying tuition will have their names erased from the class roll, with the exception of those needing financial aid who must appeal to the academic affairs office for a one- or two-week extension,” said Nguyen Ngoc My Trinh, deputy chief of academic and student affairs.

The Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry said that it will not tolerate any students refusing to settle tuition on schedule, and that the school will prohibit such students from taking exams at the end of the semester.

The University of Information and Communication Technology, located in the northern province of Thai Nguyen, recently downgraded several students’ extra-curricular activity record to the lowest rank following their failure to pay tuition on time.

“They should have been banned from taking end-of-semester exams as well,” Dr. Pham Viet Binh, the president, said. “We still let them sit for the tests this time, but a ban will surely be imposed from the next semester.”
