News and Events College students in Ho Chi Minh City will have to grit their teeth to pay more as landlords are hiking rent amidst soaring prices ahead of the new school year, which begins in early September.
Accommodation costs have risen 20 to 40 percent, depending on location, putting new pressure on students who, like everyone else, are already battling increases in food, fuel, and healthcare expenses.
Rent has increased by VND100,000 (US$5) to VND300,000 ($14), a large portion of students’ monthly expenditure, in such districts as 7, 9, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan, and Thu Duc, while an even higher increase has been seen in central city areas.
A room, for instance, can cost VND1 million ($48) to VND3.5 million ($168) a month in those districts, which accounts for a third, or even all of, a student’s budget.
Short supply has allowed landlords to raise rents without any hesitation, a student said.
“Rooms are all in bad condition, but a limited supply allows the owners to charge as much as they like,” he complained.
Many students added that landlords have also multiplied fees for power and water supply along with the increased rent.
Dorms available
Ho Chi Minh City college dorm officials say more rooms will be put into use in the upcoming academic year.
The Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, a bloc consisting of many leading universities in southern Vietnam, will offer around 9,500 new dorm seats for its students, dorm director Tran Thanh An said.
Meanwhile, Nong Lam (Agriculture-Forestry) University will be able to provide accommodations for 1,300 new enrollees in September, while about 25,000 dorm seats will be available to students at the Ho Chi Minh City Banking University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, Ton Duc Thang University, and University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, according to those schools’ dorm managers.
A number of other colleges have also said their new dorm buildings will be completed in the second semester of the coming school year.
