The quota for public high schools students in HCM City this year is about 64,600, leaving approximately 14,000 students with no chance of receiving a public education which was generally known as best in the education system.

The reason for the shortfall was attributed to an increase of nearly seven per cent in the number of junior high school students graduating this year, compared with a year ago, said the city's Department of Education and Training.

This year, about 79,000 junior high school students are expected to graduate across the city.

Meanwhile, the enrolment quota at many high schools this school year has also seen some cuts, especially at top schools.

For instance, the Nguyen Huu Huan high school plans to take in 135 less students than last year, while the quotas for enrolment at the Bui Thi Xuan and Hung Vuong schools have been cut by 45 students each.

These decreases might be a result of the Department's policy asking for a reduction in the number of students per class this year, in an effort to improve teaching quality.

The municipal Education and Training Department Vice Director, Nguyen Tien Dat, said the enrolment quota for future graduates from junior high schools to study at private high schools and vocational training centres was nearly 50,000 this year.

"The students should therefore carefully consider their abilities before registering at high schools to draw the best benefits," Dat said. — VNS
