The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) has ordered 27 higher learning institutions, including atomic energy and military academies, to shut down enrollments for 57 doctoral programs because they could not meet national requirements for faculty members.

The schools failed to include one associate professor or full professor and four PhDs, three of whom must specialize in the disciplines they teach to graduate students, in their tenured faculty as required by MoET.

Some of the suspended majors were exclusively offered at these educational institutions, MoET said, which include top-tier schools like Hanoi Medical University, Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University, Vietnam Academy of Navy, Vietnam Military Medical Academy, and the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute.

The education ministry revealed that it had warned the schools of this punishment in 2010 when an inspection showed that they could not guarantee a qualified academic team.

They can start enrolling again only when the tertiary schools have rectified the situation and completed other paperwork formalities, the government body said.

Current PhD students can still proceed with their studies at these schools and get a degree after they finish, it noted.
